Nocturnal Blood - Nocturnal Crucifixions 7" Ep Review by M.A. User:
"Varcolac" "The darkest death." Rating: 97%
I'm
trying to think of a way of starting this review that paints a picture of me
standing listening to this in the dark, head tilted back with my eyes rolled
back until only the whites show - maybe the words will come eventually but that
is how the two invocations on this record should make you feel too. The darkness
I'm talking about is a thicker, less penetrable darkness than on the previous
demo tape. There the black feeling was more one of a ritual setting - maybe
candles illuminated the hooded figures responsible for the music and the shadows
they cast only aiding the sense that there was someone or something there.
This time Nocturnal Blood have succeeded in extinguishing all light from the
music and put the listener alone in the dark where the roars and and searing
guitars reverberate around a seemingly cavernous hole with no indication of
where it's walls may be. The production here is huge sounding and the vocals are
mixed just right to give that feeling of something unknown delivering it's
damnations from a throat truly possessed. Although different in delivery the
vocals here remind me of those found on Incantation's Mortal Throne Of Nazarene
- completely inhuman and reminiscent of what could only be a beast of massive
proportions (probably with the head of a goat too). Where as the 1st demo had
obvious nods to the old gods of bestial black death this release forges a path
that feels more contemporary and comparison with the Teitanblood side of the
split 7" with Proclamation seems like the most accurate. If you're listening to
this record the chances are you're probably a fan of the aforementioned
Spaniards anyway but there's plenty here to get you to a similar place. The
ending of "Nocturnal Doom" with it's distant, echoing pounding leaves you stood
helpless in the darkness, unable to see two inches in front of your face and
aware of only impending doom. This is arcane, threatening death metal gloom of
the highest calibre.
